Marketers, We Have a Problem.

As marketers and advertisers, our credibility among potential customers — i.e., the percent of people who deem advertising as “very accurate” is down to (are you ready?) three percent. Also, according to a report from Market research firm Lab42, 76% think that advertising claims are exaggerated.

I’m a bit amazed that the numbers aren’t actually worse.

Marketers, we need to look at what we’re doing, how we do it, or why we do it. And when I say “look,” I really mean “change.” A lot of people like to think they’re flexible and open to change, but the truth is that change scares the bejeezus out of most of us.

The average tenure of a CMO at major firms is, at last count, about 18 months. They’re dropping like flies out there. It that’s not a sign of impending extinction for marketing, what is?

Is marketing dead? If you’re a marketer or advertiser, please feel free chime in … while you can.
